Unison's membership is made up of individuals from all walks of life and all parts of the world. Every one of them is entitled to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
Challenging discrimination and winning equality is at the heart of Unison's policies. Because we recognise that equality is an inseparable part of all trade union issues, we actively campaign for equality in the workplace and in the wider world. More on Unison UK>
UNISON is committed to achieving equality for all. One of the ways we promote equality is through self-organisation. Self-organisation brings together members from certain under represented groups - women members, black members, disabled members and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members. Self-organisation helps the union identify and challenge discrimination and build equality. It can be a way for members to get involved in the union, developing skills, expertise and confidence. Unison believes health and safety in the workplace is an issue for everyone. Every year, thousands of people suffer accidents and ill-health at work - most of which could be avoided.
Unions and health and safety laws save and protect lives. But many more could be protected from harm if health and safety laws were better enforced.
We are campaigning for a new way of working, one that guarantees every worker a safe and healthy workplace. More on Unison UK>
UNISON is asking activists to take part in some research that can evaluate the success of the Safety In Numbers health and safety recruitment campaign. The aim of the research is to assess the success of the 'Safety in Numbers' campaign by capturing information on our workplace, branch and/or regional involvement and how the campaign was implemented.
The also want to know how we have managed as a branch to recruit new safety reps or members and any difficulties we have faced in promoting the campaign.
The branch health and safety committee had a meeting recently to discuss the way forward with this campaign.
It was recognised that we have to find out
More information about the campaign can be found in Health & Safety Organiser 61

UNISON Welfare supports members in a variety of ways mainly through confidential advice and financial assistance in the form of grants. For example we can help with sorting out finances, advise on benefits or put members in touch with another organisation that can help. A grant could be made, for example, to assist with household bills, ease debts or help with the cost of a much-needed break. We can often increase the financial support available by collaborating with other grant making organisations.
Support is offered through our team of experienced casework staff at national office and network of branch welfare officers. They are there to listen and help.
The difficult circumstances confronting members who need are help are rarely the result of a single problem. The grants we give often provide a vital breathing space whilst we work with other parts of UNISON and other agencies to find the varied and longer term solutions required. More on Unison UK>
